Allergy

Allergy
If you or anyone you know suffers from an allergy, you’ll know exactly how debilitating it can be, especially if you lead a busy life. And you’ll know how difficult it is to find an effective long-term solution to improve the quality of your life. If so, read on…

Let’s start by reviewing common definitions of “allergy”, its symptoms and its allopathic treatment. Put simply, it is a disorder of the immune system. Allergic reactions occur when a hypersensitive immune system reacts to a common or unusual substance. Allergy is a hypersensitivity or intolerance to certain stimuli such as drugs, foods, environmental irritants, or conditions such as temperature or weather. Food articles, ingredients in foods, medication, and other factors like pollen, dust, animal hair can all cause allergic reactions, and particularly pathogens (the agents of infection).

Runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy nose ears or eyes, and redness are some of the common symptoms of allergy.

The prevalence of allergic diseases worldwide is rising dramatically in both developed and developing countries. There is a steady increase of allergic diseases and around 30 to 40 percent of the world population is now being affected by one or more types of allergies.

Most of the traditional methods of treatment of allergic conditions do not provide satisfactory results. Commonly prescribed medications for treatment of allergic conditions are Antihistamines which suppress the symptoms but actually do not completely treat the condition.

Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine provides holistic and natural remedies to treat allergies with effective medicines which are free of side effects.

Ayurveda states that Asatmya is a result of weak or imbalanced Agni (digestive fire). A weak Agni means there is Ama dosha (toxin) formation in the body. Therefore allergies are more common in people with Ama dosha in their system.

Ayurveda classifies allergies in three categories depending upon Dosha (vital Energies of Body or bodily humours - Vata, Pitta, Kapha) dominance. We treat Allergy by first focussing on avoiding the cause (Nidan Parivarivarjan). When the acute phase of Allergy passes, Panchakarma procedures (Five detoxification procedures described in Ayurvedic text) are carried out as per the requirement of the condition to correct the imbalanced Agni, to eliminate excess Dosha from the body and to help strengthen the immune system.
